If there is any story where I am serious, this is the one. One evening long ago, an artist friend told me of his experience in WW2. His assignment meant certain death. I can only imagine what went through his mind while he waited for his orders to deploy. When they arrived, he learned that they had been changed, for the worse.
This accounting, my version of his plight, fell out onto the page one night, almost word for word as it now reads. I was not capable of illustrating it, but a friend in Japan, Masaaki Kimura, was doing (and still is doing) eloquent, creative abstract art. I sent him Inside Outside and asked if he’d be interested in illustrating the story. No one could have captured these words better than what he created.
